SWONE

SWONOS

SWONOS brings together independent software development — from Windows applications and creative tools to system components and its own operating system.

The operating system

The current SWONOS foundation is already being visibly developed into a distinct system.

SWONOS is being built step by step on a usable desktop foundation. Its interface, Start menu, icons, window presentation and other system areas are adapted or rebuilt. The objective is not a loose collection of components but a coherent operating system with its own identity.

Its own interface

SWONOS has a distinctive visual language, with customised interface components, its own Start menu and recognisable system elements.

Device support

Existing Linux drivers remain the first option. Controlled device detection is being added to allow further hardware to be integrated safely.

Data-minimising architecture

SWONOS is designed to avoid unnecessary telemetry and covert data collection. Privacy and control over system connections are built into the architecture rather than added later.

SWONOS Update

A dedicated update infrastructure is already technically prepared.

At update.swonos.eu the foundation for a dedicated package repository is in place. Stable and development channels have been created. A local Release Center is intended to bring package creation, signing, validation and publication together.

The technical basis for SWONOS updates already exists. A fully automated update system for end users is still being developed.

Frequently asked questions

Answers about the current development status.

Is SWONOS finished?

No. SWONOS is still under active development. Successful kernel tests and a working development environment are not the same as a released end-user version.

Is SWONOS a Linux system?

The current foundation uses Linux technology. Beyond that, SWONOS is developing its own system components and a separate kernel development branch.

Will Windows applications and drivers work?

Full compatibility cannot yet be promised. Earlier resource-intensive approaches were discontinued in favour of more targeted and efficient long-term solutions.

How will updates be delivered?

A dedicated update repository already exists for future distribution of SWONOS components. The full release process and subsequent connection to end-user systems are still being developed.

How much does SWONOS cost?

SWONE projects aim to be free to use and privacy-friendly. A generally available end-user version of SWONOS has not yet been released.

Why is privacy so important?

SWONOS is designed not to turn the user into the product through unseen background data collection. Data minimisation, controlled connections and transparent technology are therefore at the heart of the project.
